What is 'The Axehead Journal' ...a blog, a music website, a band ..?  Kind of all that. We call it 'rock for the digital age'.

The Axehead Journal releases music on a rolling basis, posting tracks like blog items. Forget the traditional model and the way music has been packaged and sold to us since the mid-sixties through. Then the release cycle: Why wait two or 1 year to get music out ? This is why Axehead + journal came together: Pushing the riffs as the web headlines.
This way, we hope we can keep it fresh and interesting for you guys out there.
Two things we recommend: 1) Please follow or 'like' us via your preferred social network (Facebook, Twitter...) The news section is also powered by TUMBLR so fellow TUMBLR bloggers or site owners can connect that way as well. 2) Add our songs to your playlists on Spotify. This is a free service for while this is paying royalties to us and helps spread the message.

What is The Axehead Journal?

The Axehead Journal is an alternative and experimental rock act based in London. As its main producer, singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, Guigz remains solely responsible for its direction.
The Axehead Journal’s concept has developed through various release formats, incarnations and line-ups. Spanning across a variety of genres, The Axehead Journal’s music retains a characteristic percussive rock-based sound incorporating soundscapes, electronic instruments, re-sampling and processing.
The Axehead Journal draws inspiration from 21st century tabloid media and has made 5 studio releases since 2008 following an internet-only, ‘blog' type of release schedule.

Some history

After playing in industrial-ambient- experimental London-based combo 'Magneteek' feat. Sarah West, Mike Vaughan and Stereo Mike, Guigz started to gather a bunch of ideas for a new and more personal direction. Writing bits of songs whilst travelling in 2004-6, the new, wacky project starts to take shape. As described by Guigz, the initial demos were designed to present the project as 'news on acid', mashing up Gonzo-like lyrics with rock grooves and smoother undertones. 'Inspired by true evens' (The End Of Oil) or real life experience (Hooligans Inc), those songs would form the basis of "tabloid Rock" the debut album.
Released in September 2008, the album receives subsequent radio airplay in UK, France and Canada and attention from underground media. From there Guigz and the first trio line-up shoot the video The End Of Oil with creature-crazy movie director Julien Vray and actress Al as Lady Oil and start promoting the album live. A new 'power-trio' band is later put together for shows throughout 2009-10 with avant-guarde bassist Toots, multi-instrumentalist Stevie K on drums joining Guigz on Guitar and lead vocals. During that time, the band added additional feel, depth and a thicker groove to the project, recording 5 songs with London-based engineer/producer Yan Gilbert-Miguet for the 'Perfect Hell EP' project which also including a live version of Bureau-krassy 'Live In London'.
A year later, the traditional band approach gives way to a newer and more radical direction as The Axehead Journal goes full circle and morphs into an 'blog-act' focusing on the release of the 'baddest' music on a 'rolling basis', as the experimentation goes on with new formats and collaborations on each new release.
Later on 25 June 2011, The Axehead Journal announced their ultimate 'bass-ass' collabo with avant-guarde/ experimental filmmakers for 'Return Of The Blowfly' the first episode of the 'BUBBLEMAN' animation series recently awarded 'Best cross-media' project at the 2011 Annecy Animation Festival, France.
The second part of 2011 saw The Axehead Journal pass the 150,000 play mark across the web with hardly any promo. During this time the Axelab studio was also re-located in London. December 2011 also marked the re-launch a fully mobile compatible .com.
